The new PhD programme Smart Cities (S) responds to the significant urbanization trend in the increase of the population living in cities, which requires new management methods for the further sustainable development of urban settlements, both of the whole (holistic approach) and of individual subsystems such as transport systems, urban planning, logistics systems, architecture, security systems, energy systems and others. From a systems science perspective, it is a connection of sub-systems that help to shape and finalize city's behaviour, which must be in accordance with a defined sustainable and resilient urban development strategy.

Study structure

The structure of the study aims to prepare students to deal with complex analytical, decision-making and implementation processes in the field of transport and urbanism at both the current level of knowledge and the prospects of development. As this is an interdisciplinary topic, experts from the Faculty of Transportation Sciences and the Faculty of Architecture of CTU in Prague will participate in the teaching. The orientation of the study programme is aimed at deepening the student's theoretical knowledge for specific scientific work by solving scientific research tasks under the guidance of a supervisor.

Graduate employment

Students will be prepared for careers involving the design, implementation and operation of Smart Cities, including working in international practice, innovative research and interdisciplinary environments, or for follow-up doctoral studies.

Graduates of the SC - Smart Cities Master's degree programme will acquire knowledge in the fields of transport, intelligent transport systems, systems science, logistics, project management, basic urban planning, Smart Cities design including related Smart Cities theory and supporting computer tools.
