Perhaps all practical tasks in transportation require the application of mathematical tools at some point. However, this is often done without a deeper understanding of the principles, using mathematical tools as a "black box". Most tools make this possible, but the results often do not match. Often inappropriate mathematical models are applied, data is not preprocessed sufficiently, some default settings of the tools are used and the results are misinterpreted.
At the same time, the experience gained from a particular project is not shared with others and is often not worked further. Therefore, the main objective of the LAMbDΛ laboratory was to create a competence centre that will build up knowledge in mathematical modelling and the application of mathematical tools for transport and logistics tasks in a long-term perspective.
The goal is substitutability, where the correct solution is not tied to a specific person. The laboratory will combine the experience of the teachers with the involvement of the students.
