Annotation:
The study of the key role of the Pilsen Premonstratensians in the development of mathematics and natural sciences in the Czech lands in the second half of the 19th century has so far been out of the interest of historians of sciences. The project will be devoted to the analysis of the fundamental and underestimated contribution of enlightened, extremely capable and educated professors working at the Pilsen grammar school. In a broader context, their efforts to modernize teaching, to start teaching in Czech, to write Czech textbooks and to develop Czech professional terminology, their educational, cultural and revival activities will be subject to historical research. Special attention will be paid to the transformation of their views on political, social and cultural events, literary and artistic production. The research will bring original knowledge about the history of Czech mathematics and its teaching in the wider historical Central European context. The results will be presented in the journals on the history of science and education, in the final monograph, at the conferences.

Annotation:
The study of the interwar development of the European mathematical community remains, for a number of reasons, outside the interest of historians. This project will focus on the transformation of scientific life in the period between WWI and WWII. Therefore, the impact of new states’ formation, Russian Revolution, economic crisis and emigration on academic institutions will be the subject of historical exploration. Particular attention will be paid to social phenomena such as the reconstruction and development of international cooperation, the effects of religious persecution, the rise of anti-Semitism and political purges, and the process of emancipation of women in science. This research will focus on wider historical aspects, but will also bring an original insight into the history of mathematics, since it will analyze the origin, significance and implications of groundbreaking mathematical ideas on the developing trends in mathematics at the time. The results will be presented in monographs, studies published in history of science journals, and at international conferences.

This project supposes to edit a monograph Life and work of Josef Smolík (1832-1915). Josef Smolík was the full-time teacher of mathematics and physics, but he also teached Czech and French languages at a higher grammer school. He worked in several scientific and patriotic associations, he showed a highly professional approch and wide-ranging knowledge (mathematics, history of science, numismatics, archeology, popularizing of sciences, teaching methods etc). His professional works in archaeology an numismatics are estimated and quoted by now. The project supposes a lagre research work in Czech archives and libraries.

Projects presupposses the publishing a monograph which is devoted a successive revelation of Euclid´s Elements in European mathematics and a comparison three Czech transtations of Euclid´s Elements from only one was published, gathering the fundamental information about translators František Servít, František Fabinger and Josef Smolík. The monograph contributes to the detailed understanding of travelling of Euclid´s Elements in world´s and Czech mathematics and culture.
