The aim of the project is use of the image recognition for detection and measurement of contrails formed behind aircraft in order to determine the contrail occurrence. The computer vision for contrail detection and contrail parameters measurement will allow to collect and analyze data taken at several locations at the same time. The analysis of camera recordings is currently the slowest part of the data processing. Nowadays, all collected data has to be analysed manually. It means that the video recordings are observed and contrails are measured by a man. Therefore, the amount of data which can be processed is very limited. The project would improve the whole process and increase its capacity. Moreover, it would be the first application of machine learning and computer vision carried out by the Department of Air Transport.

The project focuses on evaluation of the recovery of usable meteorological data from secondary surveillance radar responses to use them as input into meteorology. All aircrafts in flight shall broadcast via ADS-B device information about the flight. Part of these data can be used as a source of information for meteorological calculations and methods. The aim of the project is to evaluate the possibilities of data obtaining from aircrafts and to cross check the usability of these data with radiosonding used in meteorology today.
