The paper deals with the problem of a communication interface between autonomous vehicles (AV) and pedestrians. The introduced methodology for assessing new and existing e-HMI(external HMI) contributes to traffic safety in cities. The methodology is implemented in a pilot experiment with a scenario designed in virtual reality (VR). The simulated scene represents an urban zebra crossing with an approaching autonomous vehicle. The projection is implemented with the help of a head-up display – a headset with a built-in eye tracker. The suggested methodology analyses the pedestrian's decision making based on the visual cues – the signals displayed on the autonomous vehicle. Furthermore, the decision making is correlated to subjects’ eye behaviour, based on gaze-direction data. The method presented in this paper contributes to the safety of a vehicle-pedestrian communication of autonomous vehicles and is a part of a research that shall further contribute to the design and assessment of external communication interfaces of AV in general.

Nowadays we are facing the transition from human-driven vehicles to the higher levels of automated driving, where the driver's primary role does not have to be the driving as in its classical meaning. As the driving task would not be the primary, we can expect driver and all passengers to perform new activities while being in the vehicle. In this article we analyse results of four crash tests. One of them has a specific configuration, where the driver crash test dummy is set to the situation of the level four of the automated driving as if were carrying out some activity on the notebook. The research focuses moreover on free objects and the risks that they represent during the accident for passengers. The results of all four tests are mutually compared and discussed to get the idea how the unusual driver position including working activity could influence the impacts on human passengers. Other three configurations represent standard lateral crash test, frontal impact into the rigid barrier and the crash of the motorcycle. The results measured on the rider show extreme situation to which we can compare absolute values of drivers from the rest of analysed crash test. In the assessment we follow the parameters linked to the acting vehicles and of course parameters describing the impacts on drivers.

Urban comfort and safety go along with travel and traffic management for the cities. Facing automatization of transport brings necessity for the ITS solutions to provide efficient communication between vehicles, infrastructure and other traffic participants. Parking in the cities is a daily travel related task. Efficient automated parking solutions can contribute to individual time management as well as to reduction of traffic flow that is connected with parking spot search - especially in big cities. User acceptance of new technologies that arise with automated driving depends on their usability and interface. This paper presents a pilot demonstration of automated parking function with a mobile app interface. Observation of visual behavior (eye tracking) provide analyses of automated parking function and mobile app of modified electric prototype of e-vehicle "Skoda Rapid".

Communication interfaces of autonomous vehicles have extended the human-machine interaction to the streets of the cities. This brings into picture the necessity of efficient infrastructures and cooperative systems and consideration of multiple human agents in the system. For efficiency of interface design process, there is a need of automated assessment tools to deliver part of testing through simulations, based on known parameters - physical, geographical and biological. Diversity of available external interfaces and absence of standardization in them give freedom for creative search of related technologies. This paper suggests a tool for assessment of various types of visual eHMI with the help of graphical method applied in a microsimulation model. The proposed method allows testing of different scenarios and adjustment of parameters for different vehicle design, interfaces and human behavior scenarios. The presented method is demonstrated on several types of visual interfaces. The paper provides introduction to the concept of vehicle external interfaces in the context of autonomous driving with relevant challenges of user communication described in related research. The methodology is then presented on a demonstration scenario with description of measured parameters that define efficiency of communication interface. The results show how placement of an interface affects its visibility to observer.

The article considers a possible improvement of road vehicle safety by using eCall – a system which initiates an emergency call in case of traffic accident. A possible way of better description of a frontal impact accident of a vehicle is examined and enriched by the information from the onboard e-call unit. In this article, we analyze results of frontal crash tests with different types of barriers and overlapping area and look for the correlation between the individual vehicle and collision parameters in order to provide a better description of the severity of the accident by the eCall system. The relation among the selected parameters is described using the correlation analysis.

This document describes the evaluation of the platform for studying problems associated with HMI for vehicles with alternative propulsion developed as a part of the grand Advanced assisting systems and their UI for future EV and HEV. This evaluation is based on design and analysis of two experiments on interactive vehicle simulator. First experiment deals with the evaluation of user acceptance of the HMI for EV based on the VW eGolf concept, including regenerative braking and second experiment evaluates user acceptance and practical benefit of the Driver Advisory System which aim is to increase EV range by advising driver when to release an acceleration pedal to reduce the speed before next limitation, with heavy usage of regenerative braking. Both subjective and objective data were used to evaluate not only particular experiments but also the platform as a whole.
