We use 3D printing as a modern production technology not only from a practical point of view for the production of components of our devices, but we also focus on it from a scientific point of view. 3D printed material has its own specifics that must be known and taken into account when using it. We have our own FFF and SLA 3D printers at our workplace. We are also researching metal 3D printing in cooperation with partner institutions that provide us with production capacities.

The Laboratory of Electron Microscopy at the Department of Mechanics and Materials of the Faculty of Transportation Sciences of CTU provides facilities for complex characterization of inorganic materials by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

The laboratories of the department provide facilities for the realization of dynamic experiments at medium and high deformation speeds. For example, there is a parachute machine, a Hopkinson split bar (SHPB) or a load machine based on LIMA linear motors.

Experimental activities at our department are further complemented by numerical analyses including finite element modelling (FEM), constitutive models of the tested materials or the development and use of implicit and explicit solvers for the analysis of deformation mechanisms.

The department has a flash X-ray source (Flash X-ray), a powerful X-ray machine and two high-speed cameras (Photron SA-Z). With these devices we are able to image and evaluate the fast dynamic processes inside the tested materials during their testing under strain.

We also design, manufacture and test advanced materials ranging from composites (e.g. UHPFRC) to 3D printed (meta)materials (PLA, 361L, auxetic structures, metallic multi-material structures).
