Efficient and sustainable road transport is essential for any country’s economic and social development. However, many countries face challenges such as traffic congestion, road accidents, high costs, environmental impact, the growing demand and complexity of mobility for both people and goods. Traditional systems often struggle to weigh and address these issues together, relying heavily on infrastructure-based solutions that are costly and increasingly insufficient. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) offer modern solutions by integrating technology, real-time data, engineering, and automation across road infrastructure, vehicles, and users. ITS promote traffic flow, enhancing road safety, reducing emissions, and supporting the development towards smarter and greener cities. Adopting ITS is not just an option; it becomes a necessity for a sustainable future and meeting national, EU and global targets as SDGs. BALKANITS is a multi-country project involving a consortium of two partner universities in each of Balkan countries BA-XK-ME in addition to three universities in EU CZ-RO-SE. The project aims to develop, adapt and implement innovative full/micro degree master’s programs in ITS within joint efforts between partner universities according to the existing ITS master programs at EU partner universities, Bologna requirements, EU standards, best practices, and national accreditation standards. The new/upgraded curricula will be supported by innovative elements for teaching and learning includes specialised courses for professionals, blended learning, challenge-based learning (CBL), capacity building and All-in-One web-based platform includes: web-based knowledge base, web-platform for universities-stakeholders collaboration, analytical database, video lectures, Virtual Reality (VR), summer schools, EU-Balkan handbook of best practices, etc. The project aims to equip both students and professionals in BA-XK-ME with strong theoretical and practical ITS skills.
