Annotation:
The project is focused on quantitative assessment of the risk in road tunnels. This means, for a specific tunnel and the proposed (or existing) facilities to calculate a degree of risk, respectively a number of fatalities for a given emergency scenario. Thereby it will be possible to change the equipment of the tunnel and see the impact on increasing or decreasing level of risk depending on addition or removal of some equipment. This makes possible to optimize the equipment of the tunnel in terms of maintaining a reasonable level of risk to users on the one hand and minimize capital and operating costs on the other hand. The project is based on the original idea of using artificial intelligence methods for evaluation of quality of technology. This principle was even published in the official document issued by international road organization PIARC. The aim is to bring this idea into practice by elaborating a national risk assessment methodology and programming environment that implements it. Higher ambition is to apply the method on the European level, as recommended by the directive on the single 54/2004/ES safety in tunnels on the trans-European network.
