Anotace:
The contemporary landscape of construction 3D printing of materials like clay or concrete mainly relies on planar slicing, which, regrettably, impose constraints on the realization of overhangs and cantilevered structures, thereby limiting architectural design flexibility and posing issues in fabricating intricate structures. In response to this challenge, we investigate the integration of non-planar slicing in the construction printing of structures featuring substantial overhangs. We present a novel approach to crafting print paths strategically, fragmenting the global overhang into discrete local segments. Additionally, we introduce self-balancing control to help the buildability within segments of the print path, elevating the stability of the freshly deposited concrete during the printing process. Our methodology redistributes a portion of the bending forces into tension forces oriented along the print path, thereby augmenting the structural integrity and buildability of intricate structures with overhangs and vaults. The efficacy of our method is demonstrated through a computational parametric model and a physical prototype. A comprehensive comparative analysis is conducted against conventional planar printing methods, encompassing metrics such as geometric accuracy, buildability, material efficiency, and print time.

We architects pat ourselves on the back saying that the postmodern is already over, yet we still cannot collectively define how the current era should be named. This paper will provide an angle to this discussion by pointing out some of the key principles of the postmodern movement are currently still in very early stages, yet very ambitious in the mid-term perspective. Also, the predominantly used name for the current era is suffering from a hidden yet almost unintentional anaphora: the era after (meaning post) the postmodern. While discussing architectural postmodern values, the shift from modernist hierarchical approach towards the polycentric or decentralized can feel a bit too abstract. While searching for this shift in the physical aspect of our buildings, their facades, structures or in the polyfunctional layouts of mixed-use buildings one is never fully satisfied with the findings. What if we were just missing something or looking in the wrong places? This paper would like to focus on the differences between modernist hierarchies and postmodernist decentralized networks in both thinking and making. This decision limits the scope of the paper essay, however it still provides an example of reassessing the role of postmodernism in current discourse. Using a couple of examples from areas and fields where the form of organization is already changing, this paper provides a speculative approach to answering the question in the topic of this essay. Definitions of postmodern are quite often very negative and based on lack of some values. This was pointed out by Brendan Graham Dempsey when he compared definitions from Jean Francois Lyotard, David Harvey and Fredric Jameson. (1) All these authors define postmodernism as a loss of something. In Lyotard’s case it is loss of the metanarrative and grand stories to explain our world. In the case of Harvey, it is loss of the eternal and immutable, our values and authorities. Jameson discusses the loss of a deeper meaning and the entire depth model. Let’s investigate if there is something the postmodern gave us instead.

Due to their complex geometry, it is challenging to assess wind effects on the freeform, double-curved building facades. The traditional building code EN 1991-1-4 (730035) only accounts for basic shapes such as cubes, spheres, and cylinders. Moreover, even though wind tunnel measurements are considered to be more precise than other methods, they are still limited by the number of measurement points that can be taken. This limitation, combined with the time and resources required for the analysis, can limit the ability to fully capture detailed wind effects on the whole complex freeform shape of the building. In this study, we propose the use of neural network models trained to predict wind pressure on complex double-curved facades. The neural network is a powerful data- driven machine learning technique that can, in theory, learn an approximation of any function from data, making it well-suited for this application. Our approach was empirically evaluated using a set of 31 points measured in the wind tunnel on a 3D printed model in 1:300 scale of the real architectural design of a concert hall in Ostrava. The results of this evaluation demonstrate the effectiveness of our neural network method in estimating wind pressures on complex freeform facades.

With the advancement of augmented and virtual reality technologies both in scale as well as accessibility, the Metaverse (Stephenson, 1992, Hughes, 2022) has emerged as a new digital space with potential for the application of architectural creativity and design. With blockchain integration, the concept of the Metaverse shows promise in creating a “decentralised” space for design and creativity with rewards for its participants. As a platform that incorporates these technological components, does the Metaverse have utility for architectural design? Is there something truly novel in what the Metaverse brings to architectural computing, and architectural design? The paper constructs a qualitative knowledge graph that can be used for the evaluation of various kinds of Metaverses in and for architectural design. We use Design Science Research methods to develop the knowledge graph and its evaluative capacity, stemming from our experience with two Metaverses, Decentraland and Cryptovoxels. The paper concludes with a discussion of knowledge and practice gaps that are evident, framing the opportunities that architects might have in the future in terms of developing Metaverse(s).

We present “ArchiDAO”, a decentralised Autonomous Organisation, i.e an architecture studio run on via smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain. The objective of the paper is to offer a concise framework for the transformation of the way architectural work is conducted, via stigmergic principles, realised on smart contracts. The paper follows a systematic review of the Viable System Model, collective authorship in architectural design and previous DAO software stacks to extract a set of stigmergic principles. We conclude the paper with a discussion and a proposal for a basic set of smart contracts that can regulate the ArchiDAO operations.

This report summarizes outcomes and achievements of project LEGO Adaptive Finalpack. The main goal of this project was to analyze the current LEGO production. The process is composed of the steps as follows: (1) definition of production recipe for a new product, (2) identification of time and cost parameters for individual production steps, (3) Long-term production planning, Short-term production scheduling, and (4) production. The main focus was on the identification of challenges that modular production lines can inject into the whole value chain. The final output of this activity was an innovation strategy for the next five years to transform the current fixed production line setup into an adaptive production environment.

Facility layout problems, i.e., optimal placement of production units in a plant, become an inseparable part of manufacturing systems design and management. They are known to greatly impact the system performance. This paper proposes a new formulation of the facility layout problem where workstations are to be placed into a hall. Within the hall, obstacles and communications can be defined. Each workstation can have multiple handling spaces attached to its sides and oriented links can be defined between workstations. A new evolutionary-based approach to solve this facility layout problem is proposed in single-objective as well as multi-objective variant. The method is experimentally evaluated on a set of standard VLSI floorplanning benchmarks as well as on the data set created specifically for the proposed facility layout problem. Results show the method is both competitive to the state-of-the-art floorplanners on the VLSI benchmarks and produces high-quality solutions to the proposed facility layout problem.

One of the attitudes to recycling plastic in architectural design is it re-printing. 3D Printing of recycled polyethylene tereftalate is in its birth-days. Recycled filament can be bought in Argentina or Netherlands but lack of experience with this reborn material blocks its use in the Czech Republic. Firstly we made a study of settings of the home-3D-printers for this material. Secondly we came with a crowd printing project, which tested the possibility to print structural pieces by on various low-cost printers.

Pomocí cihly speciálního tvaru by odpadla otázka spojovacího materiálu a konstrukce by zůstaly rozebíratelné a recyklovatelné, kde by v našem případě PET měl nepočítaně životů.

This interdisciplinary project involves the team work of the students from the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the TUL in Liberec and the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences at the CZU in Prague under the leadership of Marie Davidová (FA CTU in Prague / Collaborative Collective), Šimon Prokop (Collaborative Collective) and Martin Kloda (Archwerk). It is the continuation of the project pareSITE: The Environmental Summer Pavilion published here a year ago. Its goal is to evolve the performance of solid pine wood. PareSITE was absorbing the moisture of humid air during the night while evaporating it during hot summer days. The panelling was supporting the performance by its warping – increasing the humid air circulation. This year project took the concept further. The panelling was organised spatially and left and right side of the panels in tangential section was combined. Thanks to this as well as the shape of the structure, the pavilion performed much better.

Polyethylene terephthalate PET is a material with which each of us is confronted daily and which forms the largest part of the plastic waste which is designated for recycling (RPET). Society strives to achieve that the majority of RPET produced disposables are returned back into the production line after their use. Since our planet has only a limited supply of natural materials, we need to replace some of these with artificial materials, ideally recycled. Recycling can be done many times (not just once), however it depends on the quality of purity or impurity of RPET. The research report presents the current state of research to apply RPET using existing and proven technology for blow-molding bottles for use in architecture and construction. The basic element is a brick of rPET material. In the first phase we present the geometric properties of the future brick with respect to use of the blow-molding technology and stackability of the bricks without using connecting materials.
