Anotace:
This paper describes numerical analysis, using the programme ANSYS, for the generation of the computation model and the assessment of the influence of the geosynthetic grid and the vertical lime-cement columns on the bearing capacity and the deformation of a railway embankment on a low load-bearing subsoil. The stiffening grid is located on the interface between the embankment and the subsoil. The subsoil is also reinforced by the vertical lime-cement columns. There reinforcing effect on the behaviour of the soil construction is analysed with different types of reinforcement layers. The results of the computational modelling show that the reinforcement of the railway embankment has a favourable effect on the bearing capacity of the subgrade. The graphic outputs give a clear overview of the field layout of the equivalent stresses and the deformation during the construction of the railway substructure. A comparative analysis shows that the reinforcement of the embankment, especially the columns is important mainly for poor soils in the railway embankment, i.e. for soils with poorer material characteristics and low bearing capacity.

Dampening capability of the protective bicycle helmet during fall is proved experimentally by drop test. From measured values of acceleration in gravity centre of the dummy head it derives HIC criterion, which represent level of the dampening quality protection of the head against effects of overloading. Drop test can be simulated numerically by LS DYNA programme. Model of the dummy head is created in accordance with test standards, model of the helmet is made out from 3D scanning for three model variants - without hardening of the surface, with hardening outer or over all surface. Values of the HIC criteria are determinated from estimated results of accelerations during the drop test simulation.

This article deals with finite-element (FE) modelling of the reinforcing effect of the geosynthetic material used in the construction of a ballasted track. Various different designs of geosynthetic material are studied and their reinforcing effects are evaluated in terms of the total settlement reduction. Three-dimensional FE models of the reinforced railway superstructure are compared to a reference FE model with no reinforcement. Each geosynthetic material is modelled respecting its material properties, and the interaction with the ballast material is simulated according to its primary function.

Article deals with investigation of physical and mechanical properties of trabecular bone. Non-destructive ultrasonic tests and heat measurements were used to determine the modulus of elasticity of each sample. The velocity of longitudinal ultrasonic waves' propagation depends on the mechanical properties of the material, so the Young's modulus can be obtained from the formula coupling elasticity modulus, wave velocity and bone density.

The aim of this work is to verity the usability of numerical modelling for soil construction of a railway reinforced with geosynthetics when using the ANSYS programme. For the computation model of a simple ground body the process of model creation, choice of finite elements, definition of material features, application of contact elements, definition of boundary conditions and setting the parameters of computation were verified. The bearing capacity of soil construction has great importance for practice. The reinforcement of a geogrid has a favourable effect on bearing capacity of the embankment. At the lower embankment the bearing capacity has increased by 46%, at the higher by 13%. Also the prestress of the reinforcement is favourable.

The article deals with contact stress analysis of pelvic bone after implantation of cemented acetabular component with imperfections of cemented layer. 3D high resolution FE model of pelvic bone was created from the sequence of CT-slices. Boolean operations were used for inserting the spherical cemented component. Cemented component was eccentrically inserted into the pelvic bone and that created imperfection as non-uniform cement layer. Two contacts were defined in the FE model. The first contact is defined between the cement layer and the pelvic bone and the second one is between the cement layer and the polyethylene cup. The model was loaded by quasi-static joint forces, representing the maximum value of stance phase of gait [Bergmann et al., 2001]. The FE model was used to ascertain the contact stress conditions in the underlying subchondral bone.

In general all orthopaedic operations may cause the change of muscle balance. This dysbalance various not only range of movement but also the loading vector during the movement. In case of hemiarthroplasty when the new joint is created by femoral replacement and intact acetabulum could be the dysbalance very dangerous. Migration of the implant head after hemiarthoplasty is the problem which observed to nearly at all patients. Muscle dysbalance and shape of acetabulum are the two main problems solved by numerical analysis of hip joint FE model.

Hip joint replacement is the only way for millions of patients to recover their mobility. Hemiarthroplasty is a surgical procedure which replaces one half of the joint with an artificial surface and leaves the other part in its natural (pre-operative) state, which article deals with. There are volumetric models used for analysis. Pelvic bone geometry was obtained from computer tomography using semi-automatic generation. Model was solved in various loading directions with loading direction from -45° to 10°. The stress and displacement fields show that primary migration of the replacement head follows the direction of loading.

The paper deals with the pilot project of modelling the drop of the head with a helmet when the ANSYS LS DYNA programme is used. The goal of the project is to get details about the contact forces or stresses between the cranium and helmet, which will be used for further development of safety helmets or for modelling of a head injury at accident. The properties of safety helmets are investigated on a drop tester in experiments. For the brain protection the most significant fact is to know the maximum acceleration at the impact as the high level overloading permanently damages the brain.

Paper presents a detailed finite element model of human head used for head injury criteria assessment. Today most used HICs are based on the history of linear acceleration only. However, the rotational acceleration plays also important role, due to the rupture of bridging veins involved in the relative motion between the skull and the brain. Presented model allows for new approach to define the HIC based on either strain energy or on combination of linear and rotational acceleration history. The model is based on a series of CT and MRI scans of a cadaver head of high resolution and is composed of three different regions: (i) skull, (ii) brain and (iii) subarachnoidal space. Discussion on material properties of these four distinct regions is given in the paper.

Confluence of the rivers Berounka and Sázava and outflows from the Vltava dam cascade caused the flow in the lower part of the river Vltava in Prague. The Vltava culminated in Prague on 14 August with a flow of 5160 m3.s-1; this corresponds to a period of recurrence of 500 years. The extension of floods in the Vltava valley in Prague caused penetration of water into underground spaces of the Metro and water flooded 19 of 53 underground stations. Looseness of cable bushings through pressure interfaces and non-closure of some pressure interfaces were the most important cause of spreading of water in underground spaces. After the floods of August 2002 the accredited laboratory CTU in Prague, Klokner Institute designed a methodology of experiments and testing system and performed tests on reliability of cable bushings and on material properties of the U 5000. Results of experiments lead to the recommendation to replace all the existing cable bushing in Prague Metro.

The paper deals with loosening and migration of cementless acetabular cups into the pelvis that belongs to the most serious therapeutic complications arising sometimes several months to years after operation. The aseptic loosening of the cup is mainly influenced by two mechanical factors: ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene wear and initial cancellous bone stresses. The geometry of the acetabular cups was designed directly in ANSYS and imported to the database file containing the geometry of the pelvic bone generated from the CT scans. Research was concentrated on the analysis of contact stresses and strains.

The paper reports on development process of finite element models of human skull used in investigation of extreme stress state during a traffic accident. The procedures used in the development of the geometry of the skull from the series of computer tomography scans are shortly described and simplified FE-models presented. Results from a simple FE analysis using several models of different resolution are compared to estimate optimal number of degrees of freedom and to develop a numerically optimal model of human skull. The finite element models will be mainly used for evaluation of parameters that are necessary for protective helmet design.

Study of the Possible Mechanical Reasons For the Acetabular Cup Migration Which is one of the Main Causes for Total Hip Replacement (THR) Instability and Leads to an Early Re-Operation. The First Possible Reason For this Phenomena can be Explained by the Wear Volume of the Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHWMPE) Acetabular Cup. The Second Reason For the Acetabular Cup Migration is Excessive Cancellous Bone Stress. Both Influences Are Studied For Several Types of Prosthesis Using a Detailed FE-Model of the Pelvic Bone Constructed Using Data Obtained From Computer Tomography (CT)Scans.

For the Needs of Forensic Medicine the Knowledge of Mechanical Behavior of the Whole Bones is of High Importance. Mechanical Properties, Such as Young's Modulus of Elasticity and Poisson's Ratio Have Already Been Measured Using Small Pieces of Bones, Which is For the Needs of Forensic Medicine Useless. Moreover, these Characteristics Are Age-Dependent and Therefore Usually Considered as the Average Comparative Values. The Aim of the Work is to Describe the Possible Relationship Between the Mechanical Fracture of the Bone in Relation to Age and Sex For Different Bones and Types of Mechanical Loading. For the Assessment we use Both Mechanical Testing in Vitro and Mathematical Modeling.
